Information about Gautam Buddha
Around 566 B.C. Siddhartha Gautama was born as the prince in a region of Nepal. The wise advisors of the royal family predicted before Siddhartha’s birth that if he saw someone old, someone sick, someone who was dead, and met a monk he would leave the palace and become a monk himself rather than a prince. His mother died at his birth and his father spent time and money to guard Siddhartha from leaving the palace. But, Siddhartha ventured out and the predictions of the wise advisors became true. He left the palace and lived a life revolved around discovering the root of suffering and happiness. He sat beneath the Bodhi tree for forty days until he felt as though he had truly found himself. He spent his time helping others and teaching them how to find themselves in the face of suffering and unhappiness. He taught that in order to be truly happy, one must reach enlightenment, a state in which they are selfless and free of greed, desire, and want. When Siddhartha finally reached freedom from all worldly things he became the Buddha, or the Enlightened One.
